Rhode Island Man Charged After Operating on His Own Dog

February 5th, 2010 by Jeffrey P
Respond

Not being able to afford the surgery to remove a cyst from his 14-year labrador’s leg a Rhode Island man opted to perform the procedure himself. The man was apparently successful in removing the cyst however the labrador required a follow-up procedure to deal with the infection as a result of the at-home surgery. Alan MacQuattie pleaded no contest last week to misdemeanor charges of animal cruelty and unauthorized practice of veterinary medicine. He still insists he did not think there was anything cruel about it. [Read more →]

West Hollywood Pet Shop Ban

February 3rd, 2010 by Jeffrey P
Respond

Monday, the West Hollywood City Council voted unanimously to approve a new ordinance that bans the retail sales of dogs and cats at pet shops. The West Hollywood ordinance is similar to the one passed in South Lake Tahoe, CA in 2009. One of the underlying goals of the new ordinance to close off a primary channel for the sale of dogs and cats produced in large-scale, commercial breeding facilities such as puppy mills. The city hopes this action will also lead to an increase in the number of adoptions from local animal shelters and rescue groups. In the Los Angeles area alone last year more than 100,000 dogs and cats were euthanized last year.

I think this is a great idea although outside of California I think similar ordinances will have a harder time gaining traction. However there is evidence that the business model can work, both Petsmart and Petco refuse to sell puppies and kittens.

Before Girls in Bikinis and Spuds MacKenzie there was Buster the Beer Guzzling Buffalo

Note: I am not personally condoning the sharing of alcoholic beverages with your pets or livestock. I am simply sharing a humorous story about what my suburb of now nearly 90,000 people used to be like before the master planned communities, outdoor malls, and supercenters dominated the scenery.

Years ago, prior to my conception, there stood a bar about 20-25 miles south of Houston called “Country Place.” Country Place was owned by a gentleman who understood the intricacies of marketing, J.B. Choate. Mr. Choate knew he needed more than just a bar out in the country to attract enough patrons to stay afloat. Like the bars and beer companies of today, Mr. Choate could have organized female mud wrestling, wet t-shirt contests or beer drinking game competitions but he wanted a family friendly facility and what’s more friendly than a beer drinking buffalo named Buster? Buster became an attraction and more importantly made a trip to Country Place a trip worth taking. Many “old-timers” in my neighborhood have fond memories of taking their kids out to Country Place to see Buster and have him demonstrate his talent for guzzling beer. Locals and tourists would stop in and buy Buster a beer so they could see him devour it in seconds. Mr. Choate was a genius; he probably sold more beer for Buster’s consumption than he did to his actual customers. More importantly Mr. Choate proved you do not need to revert to crude, degrading marketing tactics to sell a beer.

Sniffer Dogs, Man’s Best Friend in the Wake of the Haiti Disaster

January 18th, 2010 by Jeffrey P

Duncan - Karel Navarro, AP

In what appear to be one of the largest search-and-rescue efforts in modern history; many search-and-rescue task forces are relying on sniffer dogs to scour the vast amount of rubble for signs of life. Even in the high-tech times we live in with robots, listening devices and search cams, none of these devices can cover such a large area of rubble as quickly and effectively as man’s best friend. Molly, An Amputee Pony is Inspiring other Amputees

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Molly was just a regular pony until a vicious dog attack led to an amputation of Molly’s front right leg below the knee. The operation was performed by surgeons at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. After the surgery Molly was fitted with a prosthesis which is pretty rare among horses. Since using a prosthetic limb requires training it takes a pretty intelligent and patient animal for it to be successful, turns out Molly is both. Now that Molly is back on all fours she is helping inspire other amputees and people with disabilities. She seems to be especially effective at helping the children of amputees/disables with understanding and acceptance.

Texas Woman Dies Trying to Rescue her Dogs from Icy Pond

January 12th, 2010 by Jeffrey P
Respond

A Forth Worth woman drowned after apparently attempting to rescue two of her dogs that fell through a thin layer of ice covering a pond. Her body was recovered after somebody from a nearby subdivision reported a dog running loose around the pond to the local animal control authorities. Animal control authorities came across the woman’s coat, cell phone and ID while trying to capture the dog. Animal control authorities immediately contacted the police department. Shortly after a dive team recovered her body along with her two dogs. Friends of the woman are still trying to capture the woman’s third dog.

You might be a Berner If?

If you have never owned a Bernese Mountain Dog here are some of the things you are missing out on in life.

  • You run from the water bowl straight to my dress pant leg to leave that signature water/slobber mark that keeps me looking professional throughout the day.
  • You leave a trail of water originating from the water bowl by strategically not swallowing that last mouthful of water. This way you can find your way back.
  • Every time you see a cat, even if it’s for the 367, 921st time, you act like it is the first time ever and get so excited you nearly pee yourself.

Link to a very good, interesting article on how Pennsylvania is starting to crack down on puppy mills through new legislation and a revamped Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement. I had no idea the Amish were so involved in puppy mills.
