Bat!

June 15th, 2009 by Jeffrey P

Bat!So I originally wanted to start the week with a discussion of dog parks but due to events that occurred this past Friday I got a little sidetracked. I had a late lunch with my wife on Friday and as soon as I walk back into my office and sit down at the computer, the phone rings. My wife’s frantic voice is on the other end, “I have a problem” she says. “There is a bat hanging onto the swimming pool rock waterfall.” Apparently, she had gone out to the pool to go swimming with Emma (the Bernese Mountain Dog) and she did not notice the bat, Emma did however. Emma swam over to the bat and apparently to some extent touched the bat with her mouth. The disturbing part of this is situation, other than Emma touching the bat, is the bat did not move and its out during the middle of the day. After some deliberation about how to handle the bat, we decided to call Animal Control. My wife makes the call and apparently the lady she talks to is somewhat freaked out, my wife found this quite comforting. She brought to our attention one minor detail we had failed to think about, rabies. Within 30 minutes the animal control officer is out at the house collecting the bat, within 35 minutes I make it home from the office, within 45 minutes we are at the vet with Emma getting a rabies booster shot. Now we are awaiting the test results from the lab to find out if the bat was rabid. Fingers-crossed for a negative test in order to avoid a possible mandatory quarantine of Emma. To be continued……

  • I hope Emma ends up being okay!! That’s odd about the bat being out in the day like that – must’ve been sick (but I hope not!)
We are picking up our Bernese puppy at the end of this month and it’s nice to find another blog/site of other Berner owners.
    Take care!!

  • Thank you Shelley. Having Emma has been quite the experience! BTW…Scout is a good looking Berner! (Emma was the runt of the litter too) I’ll be sure to look for updates at the end of the month.
