A study out of the University of Sussex has proven cats have the ability to alter their meow in order to get their human companions to do what they want. Turns out this secret meow, which I am terming the manipupurr, is a combination of a purr and a high-pitched cry.
If you break it down it’s pretty brilliant. Most people, me included, interpret purring as a sign of joy and happiness. At the other end of the spectrum is the very annoying, high-pitched I’m in heat kind of meow, the one that keeps you up all night pulling out your hair because you just want to 4 hours of sleep.
Cats, in a very navy seal-like fashion, have come up with a combination of the two. The manipupurr is just cute enough and slightly agitating enough that you do not ignore them or run them off but instead just give them what they want: food, treats, attention, etc.
Spaz and Wubba your secret is out and your game is ruined. No longer will you take control of my mind to get what you want. I am telling everybody I know; no longer will the feline world control the human race.
The study can be found in the July 14th issue of Current Biology (Volume 19; Issue 13; pgs. 1065-1158).
