California Targets Breeders Using AKC Website

July 8th, 2009 by Jeffrey P

californiaIt’s no secret that the state of California is having serious financial problems. At work, I began noticing about a year ago that the state was levying all of these crazy fees and taxes on our California operations that I had never heard of before. Just this week I received a bill from the California Board of Equalization. The bill is notifying me of a penalty and interest accumulation from some unpaid fee which is not specifically identified in the letter. The funny thing is, the bill shows the fee we owe is zero yet somehow we are being assessed a penalty for not paying it and interest is accumulating on a zero balance.

In a similar fashion, the State Board of Equalization is now using the AKC website to search for dog owners living in the state of California who might be breeding and selling dogs. Once they identify “potential” breeders they send out friendly letters reminding these owners that anybody who sells more than 2 dogs per year must pay a special tax to the state on those sales.

I realize the state needs to generate income but people are going to start packing their stuff up and moving out of the state which will lead to an even bigger financial crisis. You cannot even toast a waffle anymore in California without having to pay a fee for polluting the air. The state has classified microscopic waffle particles as a potential carcinogen just so they can tax it. Next thing you know the state is going to install fart sniffers in your house and every time your dog farts you are going to be assessed a greenhouse gas generation fee.

So Californians beware! And be on the lookout for a new gas tax.
