Researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand recently tested the old fable about a thirsty crow that comes across a container of water but the water level is too low for him to reach.
The researchers exposed the Rooks (similar to a crow) to a cylinder containing water with a worm floating on top. The water level was such that the Rook could not reach the worm floating on top. The researchers also provided the Rook with rocks of various sizes. It did not take the Rooks long to figure out they could drop rocks in the cylinder with water to raise the water level. Not only that but they also quickly determined that large rocks were better because they raised the water faster.
