Have you ever wondered what your dog’s food or treats taste like? Or, if my dog can live off dog food could I live off a diet of dog food? If yes, you are not alone. I too have occasionally covertly tried a dog cookie or treat. Hopefully this info will quench that curiosity and keep you out of the Dog Food bag.
First, dog food is not regulated to the same level of health and safety standards that food destined for human consumption is. It is true that dog food and treats contain a lot of ingredients that you can find in the food you purchase at the grocery store. However, the process dog food goes through to get from the source to the shelf is not nearly as regulated and watched over by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Now, so does that mean you should not eat it? Eating dog food or treats in small quantities is not going to make you hike your leg on a tree and bark at the neighbors. Can you sustain of a diet of dog food? The answer is most likely not. Dogs require different proportions of fat, carbohydrates, protein and other nutrients to be healthy. That proportion is different than what it takes to keep you healthy. So naturally since dog food is manufactured for dogs it is designed to meet their nutritional requirements which are not the same as yours.
The Bottom Line: Your curiosity will probably not harm you but don’t be lazy and instead of going to the grocery store think you can just substitute a bowl of kibble for a bowl of Fruity Pebbles. Leave the dog food for the dogs and the human food for the humans.
P.S. Those dog cookies you can purchase from dog bakeries that look and smell just like the peanut butter cookies you love…. They don’t taste like they look and smell.
