While it would be fun and easy to blame Paris Hilton for the Great California Chihuahua crisis, the truth of the matter is the real responsible parties are the irresponsible owners. Chihuahuas make up approximately 30% of animal shelters dog population across the state of California. They are so overrun by Chihuahuas in Oakland that they are shipping them out of state like apples to shelters who wish they had more small dogs to adopt-out to good homes.
So while it convenient to blame pop culture for the Great California Chihuahua Crisis of 2009 we should really be looking at irresponsible pet owners that purchase/adopt dogs on an impulse. These impulsive pet owners usually are not adequately prepared to devote the time, effort and money it takes to properly care for a dog. The result, 10 Chihuahuas coming into Oakland shelters per day.
Let’s stop blaming Paris Hilton, Miley Cyrus and pop culture and start preaching some social responsibility for a change.
