Here in the United States rabies is almost an afterthought and the type of thing you see in a movie like Cujo but in other parts of the World it is very much a reality. Even though rabies is 100% preventable it is still killing one person every 10 minutes globally, or approximately 55,000 people per year. Nearly half of that 53,000 are young children under the age of 15.
As you might have guessed with all of the news coming out of China related to the “culling” of dogs the main source of rabies exposure is dogs. While here in the United States it is standard practice to have your pets vaccinated against rabies other countries lack these basic vaccination programs for animals and livestock. So I encourage you to visit the World Rabies Day website to read about simple ways you can help elimate rabies.
