Not only can you track your kids nowadays via GPS technology but now Positioning Animals Worldwide, Inc (now Securus, Inc). can help you track your dog that might have a tendency to stay out past curfew chasing tail like your teenager, but cat tails that is. The Spotlight GPS device fits onto your dog’s collar and provides 24/7 real-time locating services. Tracking can be done via the internet, calling AKC Companion Animal Recovery (1 888 DOG-LOC8) or now via a free iphone application.
The SpotLight GPS Pet Locator mobile iPhone app is a free download at Apple iTunes . To view and download visit:

The device is not cheap, $249.99, but becomes very reasonable considering the value it could bring to you and your family. In addition to the cost of the device there is also a monthly charge of $12.99 to $14.99 depending on how many times you plan to have to utilize the locator.
*Update* Spotlight GPS now offers a Spot “Lite” version which sells for $149.99 versus $249.99 for the original version. The “Lite” version has the same functionality but it lacking the LED beacon and removable battery.
The only thing I wish was different about this product is its size or location. While it could be invaluable for recovering your dog when he/she gets lost it is probably only marginally effective at preventing dognappers. God forbid your dog gets stolen, but one of the first things the thief is going to do is get rid of any proof of ownership, or in other words the dogs collar. Once the thief does this, the value of the capabilities obviously decreases. If your dog is microchipped, obviously that evidence would still be there but it’s only good if you know where the dog is at. This may sound a little like Gattica, but I would be in favor of some sort of implantable GPS device.

That would be pretty cool to track your dog when he runs away. I think the price is a little steep for me and lucky for me my dogs aren’t runners.
It would be cool to see a demo product. I’m going to keep my eye out when I go to the Pet Expo in April.
I downloaded Spotlight Pet tracking iPhone app and must say its works flawlessly for me. What surprises me most is that it allows the user to locate multiple pets and plot them via three different views (satellite view, digital map or hybrid) on a map.
I am using Astro 220 gps for my dog – has many more features than Spotlight GPS, and is not too costly!
Thanks for the comment! I will have to look into the Astro 220 gps.
This app works flawlessly for me. Great job Spotlight!
Thanks for the feedback Sam!
Stopped working on the I phone last month!!!!
Tech support useless
Why isn’t there an iPhone app that can scan your pets microchip and track it’s movements that way? Is that too simple? The way things work now, our dog would have to carry a cell phone.I’m wondering why someone hasn’t figured out how to do that?
