Ask anybody who owns pets with long hair or pets that shed a lot, “what is the most important appliance in their household” and I am willing to bet “the vacuum” is one of the top answers. I have used all of the typical department store brands: Bissell, Hoover, Dirt Devil, etc. and have never had one that held up well to the use and abuse it received in my household. They would run good at first but after a while their performance would begin to fade, reminiscent of Eddie Murphy’s career.
Two years ago following our latest vacuum fatality I began an intense vacuum research project. The results of which led us to purchase a Miele Vacuum Cleaner, the S5 Callisto model. Two years later the Miele is still going strong and I am convinced it is the best vacuum money can buy, especially for those of us with pets.
You have probably never heard of Miele vacuum cleaners because you cannot find them at your local Target, Wal-mart, Bed, Bath and Beyond, etc. They are German made so like the Sham-Wow guy says, “you know they’re good”. They do not look very fancy especially when you consider the steep price tag. I too was skeptical at first: the Miele is a canister style vacuum, it did not look fancy and it had FJM bags for crying out loud!
Our Bernese Mountain Dog Emma has tested the Miele to the max for the past two years (They don’t use Bernese Mountain Dogs in the Bissell commercials just because they are beautiful). The bottom line is nothing comes close to it in terms of performance, at least that I have seen.
Pros:
Cons:
So if you are looking for the best vacuum for dogs and pets that is going to last I would recommend spending the extra money to invest in a Miele.

I have been researching vacuums as we are on #4 (or is it 5?) in 8 years and this last one lasted all of 3 months (ok, it was under $50.00) and we have two kiddos, a cat and fingers crossed, will have a Berner by the end of the year.
I’m looking at the Pisces–the model just below the Callisto as we have mostly hardwood floors. After reading your review, I think a Miele will be joining our household soon.
They are definitely a little pricey but IMO well worth the money, especially if you are adding a Berner to your family. Ours is still running as strong as the day we bought it.
Loved the reviews – it is nice to see someone else with pets actually doing a long term review. I am in the market for a new vacuum and know I have a chore ahead of me to find the right one – with 6 dogs in the house. Between 2 Giant Schnauzers, 2 Irish Terriers, 1 Corgi/Irish Terrier mix and one Irish Terrier mixed with something else that sheds like a fiend I have killed a Hoover that I purchased as a backup to my Dyson. The Dyson does well but has some serious draw back (I have to move my furniture to get under it) It sometimes sounds like it is really mad about picking up dog hair….I growls and sounds like the power head is coming apart. Reality is – it doesn’t pick up nearly as well as it did when it was new. I am really starting to hate the bagless technology – while I am sure it is greener – the amount of dander and dust I get back in my face when I empty it is getting OLD! Your refrence to the “odor elimination by the charcoal filter” is a big seller – I have my Dyson disassembled, washing it at least once a month or it starts to smell like I have been vacuuming vomit – which is a smell that if you aren’t familiar with it has to be one of the worst inside a house and it lingers!
Thanks again – I think you have really helped me sort out this hunt (now 6 hours in and had it wittled down between a Kenemore and the Meile)…sounds like this is worth the almost double $$
