Chanel, a 21-year old wire-haired Dachshund and the World’s Oldest Dog past away this past Friday. Chanel was the first in the Guinness Book of World Records in the World’s Oldest Dog category. A world traveler, Chanel spent 9 years in Germany with her owner who was serving in the Army at the time. The secret to her longevity? Perhaps it was the sticks of butter she used to steal and hide in the sofa cushions, or the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups she adored or maybe the home cooked chicken she was accustomed to eating with her dog food. Whatever the reason, 21-years old is quite the accomplishment.
Now, a woman in Louisiana is claiming her dog Max just celebrated his 26th birthday and is the new World’s Oldest Dog. The officials at the Guinness Book of World Records are currently attempting to verify the age through veterinary records.
A 21-year old dog is believable. A 26-year old dog, I’m not so sure. Although, like people, pets are living to be older now due to better veterinary care and medical advances….but 26! That’s 182 in dog years! (If you buy into that formula)
