It has now been 8 weeks since Spaz received I-131 treatment to cure his hyperthyroidism. The first noticeable change was his behavior. His behavior prior to the treatment was much like that of a crackhead. He would be sitting relaxed one minute and then all of a sudden just take off running laps around the house, up and down the stairs until he was out of breath and panting. This behavior was most prominent during the middle of the night. This made for some sleepless nights for us and the dogs. Post-treatment he is much more even tempered and no more midnight marathons!

Blood tests taken 2.5 weeks after the I-131 injection showed that his T3 (thyroid) levels were back to normal. Now that we are 8 weeks out he is beginning to look really healthy again. His eyes are no long sunk into his head and he has gained over 1lb in weight! 1 pound might not sound like a lot but considering he weighed barely 7 pounds prior to the treatment we are quite happy with his progress.

Overall we have been quite satisfied with the whole treatment process. My wife would say the hardest part was being away from Spaz for the 5 days he was required to be isolated after the I-131 injection. For me it is a toss up between being away from Spaz and the $1,600 price tag for the treatment. I am only kidding, without any hesitation I would do the treatment again and recommend it to anyone with a hyperthyroid cat. So if you have a hyperthyroid cat and are contemplating how to approach it I encourage you to talk to your veterinarian about I-131 treatment.
