West Hollywood Pet Shop Ban

February 3rd, 2010 by Jeffrey P

Monday, the West Hollywood City Council voted unanimously to approve a new ordinance that bans the retail sales of dogs and cats at pet shops. The West Hollywood ordinance is similar to the one passed in South Lake Tahoe, CA in 2009. One of the underlying goals of the new ordinance to close off a primary channel for the sale of dogs and cats produced in large-scale, commercial breeding facilities such as puppy mills. The city hopes this action will also lead to an increase in the number of adoptions from local animal shelters and rescue groups. In the Los Angeles area alone last year more than 100,000 dogs and cats were euthanized last year.

I think this is a great idea although outside of California I think similar ordinances will have a harder time gaining traction. However there is evidence that the business model can work, both Petsmart and Petco refuse to sell puppies and kittens.
